Let's hear some thoughts about the "big idea"!

Have some new twists?

Have some hang ups?

is a projector just a fancy dry erase board?

Doreen, I am not sure a week is enough. How about 3 or 4 weeks to play with this stuff?

A projector is so much better than hooking up a computer to a tv. Usually the biggest tv you find in a classroom is about a 27" set. So, trying to demonstrate where to click in a window or trying to point out a specific item in a photo or video on a 27" screen is not very helpful. This projector gives me the ability to show my students anything on a 6 foot screen.

One hang-up is cables. Unless this projector is mounted, it can be dangerous (either for students or the projector). Often times, a long VGA cable (25' or 50') is needed to get from the teaching computer to the ideal location for a classroom projector. This can be avoided if there is an internet connection and lots of electrical sockets near the ideal site for a projector.

I am really excited to be able to attend this workshop, join your workgroup, and begin using this technology in the classroom. I am a classroom teacher who is no trained expert but I have used computers in the classroom for years, also teach a computer based remedial reading program for which I am the daily troubleshooter, and work with the technology committee at school. (I also teach computers nightly to second language adults who are just learning English but also get very turned on using computers.) I know I don't know everything, but I know I can find it out! What I need is time to play on it, and that is part of the time that we are allowed today. Obviously, this is going to be incremental, but this will help engage the students and present them with opportunities to which they really relate because it is the web-based world in which they live. And thanks for the offer that you will give us your email/card/communication accesss, because I am not embarrassed at all to ask ignorant questions in pursuit of something I really want to do! This will motivate my extremely reluctant (the 60 lowest in the entire junior high!) learners, to the point of surprising themselves with how well they can do. Is there a follow-up workshop just on podcasts? and other media manipulations?

Yes on the follow up. We're pretty booked for this spring,
really trying to find people like yourself and connect, but
as time goes on, the goal is to create self help groups that
we can train and then they can go on to self serve and cross train!

Awesome!

Actually, Gene was in an all volunteer class I taught, the lowest 7th graders in the whole district! He's responsible, appropriate and productive, but he's not ready to sit down and be quiet for no reason.

He can teach the class, but he can't take the class!
